For those who may doubt why so many dislike Personal Injury Lawyers...

In reading through an ad I happened to just notice (presumably because I don't get LDWs, nor am I a frequent auto renter in Louisiana) the huge jump for getting insurance in Louisiana versus the rest of the country:

Quite a jump!

I imagine this is due in no small part to the oodles of plaintiff's attorneys eager to milk the insurance companies for frivolous claims - and their equally (ir)responsible clients.

It's been a long time...

There's not a lot that shocks me anymore, but I found something.

I received one of those guilt-ridden "pass it on or you hate [insert random group/cause/puppies/etc here]" e-mails today, and in sifting through it, I saw a curious picture that showed demonstrators holding picket signs which read, "FAG SIN=9-11" right next to one that had emblazoned on it, "GOD'S ROD":

Whoa.

Once I got past the hilarity in the juxtaposition of those two signs being held by the same broad stomping the American flag, I had to know what on earth that was supposed to mean, so after a little research, I found the Westboro Baptist Church online. Holy (and I mean HOLY) crap - yes, their URL is www.godhatesfags.com. There is nothing I can write that can even begin to express the sheer amazement at this little organization. You have to see it for yourself to appreciate (or despise) it. A word of warning, this isn’t for kids or the faint of heart - they might call themselves a Church, but their message is laced with hate-filled epithets, foul language and sometimes NSFW images.

The Cliffs: evidently there is an extraordinarily repressed individual named Reverend Fred Phelps who, after procreating 13 times (if you can't attract a congregation, just make your own, right?) began to gain notoriety for being a very angry preacher who espoused God's alleged hatred for this word and the vast majority of people in it. Just a sample of this can be found on the expansive website, whereby one of Brother Phelps' followers (and presumably a relative) states, 'erybody thinks that God loves erybody...It's a false statement.'

Some of my other favorites are such attention-grabbers as the assertion that the late Pope John Paul, II is burning in hell because he was the "leader of the biggest pedophile machine on this face of this earth" and the further statement that he was a "greedy wolf in sheep's clothing looking out for his own personal gain," all the while calling the Church the "Catholic Whorehouse" full of “Catholic Fools” and finishing with their rendition of the rap song "The Roof" to the tune that "the Pope is on fire."

I've never seen such hypocrisy! They deride America and the general populace, yet continually cite pop culture references indicating their subscription to the same evil-doers as the rest of the country. Their cover of Jay-Z’s Big Pimpin is astonishing. What, no song vilifying Mother Theresa? Lord knows you could find something wrong with her, too!

How about their instant classic Thanking God for Katrina? I didn’t even know that God hated Ireland. And who can forget that God will make you eat your children? See the Whole list here, if you dare.

I can only imagine that this “Church” (and I use that term SO very loosely) is to Christianity what Islamic terrorists are to traditional Muslims. So beware the terrorists in our own midst. The hate pours from their every smarmy, self-righteous, indignant word. I feel sorrow and pity for these folks – I cannot imagine living in a brainwashed cult such as theirs.

Of course, when these people come and burn my house down because I haven't aligned myself with them, I hope this will serve as a clue on who you should go after... Actually, now that I think of it, I may delete this entry because it gives them more press that they don’t merit. Oh, well, how about I put some “equal time” links to stories about Karol Józef Wojtyła, USAID, some random people, and another few random people.

What a wonderful world...

All mine, that woman is...

Lest we forget the end-all, be-all girlie anthem, I now have footage that will haunt, er, remind us of a simpler time.

She just wants to have fun... and chomp on gum

If you can get past the gum chomping by the keyboardist, notice the drummer isn't even making contact with the skins!

And we wonder why we spend our adult lives rehabilitating ourselves after they let us do this kind of thing... and tape it...!

Brush with Fame!

On my recent trip to Los Angeles, I managed to spot a celebrity while dining at Fred 62 on Vermont. It was coincidental, because her sitcom, Halfway Home wasn't picked up by Comedy Central for another season, and I had just noticed her in a Walgreens Ad a few days ago, so she was TOM. In any case, it was the very cute and quite gracious Jessica Makinson. I emphasize the "gracious" part, since even though I knew her show, I didn't know her name, and she didn't seem at all put off by that, which is more than I can say about my encounters with other, far less known celebs. She even posed for a picture!

Jessica Makinson

Regrettably, like the brilliant Upright Citizen's Brigade show, Comedy Central evidently sees more value in pandering to the lowest common denominator by heavily promoting and renewing shows like the abomination "[Not much of a] Mind of Mencia." (URL intentionally omitted), rather than giving good shows like Ms. Makinson's a proper run. Typical!

Incidentally, I also frequented the UCB Theater in L.A. for an improv show. Good stuff.
